Pronunciation: Tew-Tew

Implying a classical ballet skirt made of many layers of tarlatan, tulle, or netting. Usually reserved for the female danvers of a company. There are many different types of tutus and as many different layers and applications as a costumer’s skill and creativity can take them. Here is the basic anatomy of a costume

Classical Tutu (platter, pancake)
9-12 layers of stiff netting layered from the panty.

Russian Tutu
Tightly tacked, usually with a hoop, and extremely flat.

English Tutu
Slightly slopes downwards and lot fluffier, may or may not have a hoop.

Romantic Tutu
3-8 layers of soft netting tightly fathered at the hip or waist, and can vary in length from the at the knee to above the ankle.

Belle Tutu
7-9 layers of netting gathered creating a 45 degree angle downwards from the hip.

Powderpuff Tutu
Created by Karinska, this is a shorter romantic skirt that is loosely tacked. It is often referred to as the Balanchine tutu.
