The Artistic Director of a ballet company is the visionary leader responsible for shaping the creative direction and artistic identity of the organization. This role combines deep artistic insight with leadership, collaboration, and strategic planning to maintain and elevate the company's reputation for excellence in classical and contemporary ballet.
Key Responsibilities:
Artistic Vision & Programming: Develop and curate the company’s seasonal repertoire, balancing classical works with contemporary innovations and new commissions. Ensure artistic cohesion and relevance that reflects the company’s mission and engages diverse audiences.
Choreographer Collaboration: Identify, commission, and collaborate with choreographers, composers, designers, and other creatives to produce original and compelling work.
Company Development: Select, mentor, and oversee dancers, rehearsal directors, and artistic staff. Foster a nurturing and disciplined environment that supports professional growth, technical excellence, and artistic expression.
Performance Oversight: Guide rehearsals, casting, and staging decisions. Uphold the highest standards of performance and interpretation.
Community & Outreach: Serve as a prominent public face of the company. Engage with donors, patrons, educators, and community partners to promote dance education and audience development.
Strategic Planning: Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors on long-term planning, budgeting, touring strategies, and company branding.
Qualifications:
Extensive professional experience in ballet, with a distinguished career as a dancer, choreographer, or artistic leader.
Strong curatorial instincts and a broad knowledge of ballet repertoire and contemporary trends.
Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities.
Excellent communication skills and a passion for community engagement and artistic collaboration.
